Teaching
As an educator, Meg has experience teaching students of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities across the nation. She currently teaches 12 students out of her private studio in NYC or via Zoom. In addition to her private studio, she has taught at the MSU Community Music School-Detroit, Cass Tech Mentorship Program, and Axis Music Academy in West Bloomfield. Meg has also presented masterclasses at the University of Michigan, Frostburg State University, and for the Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra.
Here are some testimonials from Meg’s current students;
“Cultivating and expressing our voice through our instrument is encouraged. Meg understands that each of us are unique and therefore, our musical presentations and narratives on our instrument must be unique. She stresses the importance of listening and studying other jazz artists, knowing the history of jazz as well as increasing technical proficiency on our instrument, increasing our musical/harmonic vocabulary, and ear training so that our musical narratives, expressions, thoughts, and ideas can reach higher levels.
Meg establishes an environment in which you feel comfortable to freely create and express your musical ideas. She studies her students. She can perceive even the smallest changes in her students’ playing as well as their affect. Thus, she is a “musical problem solver.” She can present ideas, solutions, and the knowledge base to increase positive and satisfying results in a students’ musical abilities and creation” — Sonja
“Meg helped move me along the path to creating my own sounds” - Joel
“Meg is the best piano teacher I have ever had and she is always teaching me new notes. We try new songs to keep me growing” - Aiden (Age 9)
“I’ve studied jazz flute with Meg Brennan for the past 3 years. In addition to being a phenomenal musician, she’s an excellent teacher. She instructs at the level of the student, knowing how to encourage skill development. Meg generously shares what she has learned, with her students. Her enthusiasm and passion for music is contagious!” - Susan Rogers, adult student
In the summer of 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Meg organized two online music camps (an adult camp and kids camp) that focused on creativity and composition. Students learned how to generate melodies through story-telling, compose fundamental harmonic progressions, notate their ideas in Noteflight, and record their songs using Soundtrap.
“I think the camp was really fun, and it was awesome getting to write my own music but also hear other's music” - Madison Galvin, 14
“Really helpful to get exposed to Soundtrap. I loved that” - Joel Stern
